The Head Start Teacher works as a member of the Annavale Headstart Nursery School teaching team to improve life situations of high-risk children and parents by teaching, modelling, and broadening life experiences and expectations.  The teacher provides a safe, caring, and developmentally appropriate environment for children ages zero (0) to five (5) years of age within the requirements of the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) and adheres to a child-centered, emergent curriculum programming philosophy heavily focused on socio-emotional skills development and guided by attachment theory principles.


  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education and current, valid registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators required
  • Three to five years full-time experience working in Early Childhood settings with children ages 0 to six years; experience in Headstart settings an asset
  • Extensive understanding of the developmental needs of children and demonstrated ability to use this understanding in program practices; knowledge of child development and behaviour management.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and establish appropriate relationships with families and caregivers; understanding of family dynamics and issues relevant to working with low-income (multi-risk) parents/caregivers.
  • Experience and flexibility working in diverse community-based programs with families facing multiple health risks and barriers (e.g., low income).
  • Cross-cultural awareness and experience working with culturally diverse populations essential
  • Established ability to supervise children in a manner consistent with the goals and philosophy of the program and the community health centre
  • Valid First Aid (Standard) and CPR (infant and child) certificates required
  • Knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years Act an asset; familiarity with attachment theory principles an asset.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization; ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent organizational skills; self-motivated and energetic
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.
  • English essential, fluency in one or more other languages pertinent to our client population an asset

Salary range: $22.57 – $26.54 + full benefits
