Location: 900 Merivale Road (Main site), Teddy’s Playroom
Team: Parent-child Team
Days: Thursdays, July – August (exact dates to be determined)
Time: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

Commitment: Six weeks. Possibility to volunteer is other positions during the school year.

Goal of the program:
Backpack Adventures is a Family Literacy School Readiness program where families will discover new information and activities to support their child’s journey into school. Each session will introduce a new school readiness component.

Description of Volunteer Role:
• Assist with the physical set up of room and any activities.
• Promote reading among participants
• Prepare snacks and clean up after preparation
• Assist with cleaning and putting away items after the sessions.
• Promote safety during the playgroup.

Qualifications:
• Ability to work in a challenging environment
• Demonstrated genuine interest in children and children’s activities
• Good communication skills, ability to speak in English (other languages, such as Somali, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, an asset)
• Caring, patient and understanding of children and children’s needs
• Punctual, non-judgmental
• Sensitive to multicultural issues
• Sensitive to issues facing low-income population.
• Reliable and dependable.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to obtain an appropriate Police Records Check.
