Mental Health Counsellor – ACT – Addictions Specialist

Full-time Regular position

Under the direction of the ACT Program Director, and as a member of the ACT Team, the Mental Health Counsellor – Addictions Specialist provides counselling, rehabilitation/ recovery, treatment, crisis intervention, support and advocacy services to clients of the team, with an emphasis on addictions.  Most client contact occurs independently in the community.

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of diploma or post-diploma certificate and relevant experience. Education in a psychiatric rehabilitation/recovery-based model and Familiarity with the Ontario Mental Health Act are assets.
  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counsellor and/or additional Addictions related education an asset.
  • Eligible for membership in an appropriate professional regulatory body allowing for the practice of psychotherapy (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers).
  • Three to five years full-time relevant experience in a community setting, preferably with mental health / addictions clients and mental health professionals. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a crisis situation.
  • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment, counselling, case management and crisis intervention techniques. Experience in applying motivational interviewing skills.
  • Knowledge of stages of change in addictions and mental health and with a harm reduction approach.
  • Experience in providing rehabilitation and support functions to mental health clients and assisting in activities of daily living.
  • Experience in applying principles of psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery and practices of case coordination in transdisciplinary teams.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources (emphasis on addictions), relevant city service-provider networks, and community-based health care.
  • Ability to maintain mature problem-solving attitude when dealing with acutely ill, intoxicated, suicidal, angry or hostile clients and hazardous working conditions (e.g., exposure to communicable diseases, pest infestations, body fluids, second-hand smoke and high-risk drug paraphernalia).
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal communication with clients and their families and written skills for documentation purposes. Administrative skills in completing reports and maintaining client charts/records.
  • Excellent issue management skills including time management, conflict management and resolution, problem-solving, prioritizing and multi-tasking.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.
  • Personal Suitability:
    • A strong commitment toward and belief in a recovery-model client-centred practice; non-judgmental attitude; commitment to the team; ability to establish supportive and trusting relationships with persons with mental illness; personal experience as a consumer of mental health services or family involvement of mental health services would be considered an asset.
    • Sensitivity to the needs of marginalized and diverse clientele (low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities); commitment to health promotion concepts, strategies, and philosophy; commitment to community-based health care and social services, and strength-based philosophy and practices
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and regular access to a vehicle required.
  • Able to work regularly scheduled days, evening, and weekend shifts, and to be available for on-call.
  • Fluency in English is required. Fluency  in a third language relevant to our client population is an asset.  This position is not designated under Carlington’s French Language Services policy.

Salary range: $27.27- $32.08 + full benefits
